Follow Jesus

A "Christian" is a Christ-follower; one who has received Jesus of Nazareth as Lord (king/master) and Savior (the one who shed his perfect blood on the cross to atone/pay for our sins).

The Bible teaches us in Romans 3:23 that every person has "sinned" (we've all broken God's commands & fallen short of God's perfect standard of righteousness).  The result of our sin is that we are enemies of God (Romans 5:10) and cut off from Him--with no hope of achieving righteousness on our own.  That's the bad news.   The good news is that the Bible also teaches us that God loves us--so much so that He sent His Son Jesus to atone (pay for) all of our sin on the cross--so that no matter what we've done--when we receive Jesus as Savior & Lord--we are washed clean, forgiven and made right with God!

Sounds incredible, doesn't it!?  That's why it's called the "Good News!"

So, how do we receive this new life and forgiveness?

Spoken by Jesus after his resurrection, just prior to His ascension into Heaven:

Matthew 28:19-20 (Jesus said to his disciples,) "Therefore, go and make disciples (Followers of Jesus) of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples (Followers of Jesus) to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

The Apostle Peter proclaimed salvation through faith in Jesus during a Jewish festival called "Pentecost" -- just a few days after Jesus gave them the Great Commission (above).

Acts 2:36-38
(Peter said to the crowd,) “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah (Savior)!” 37 Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Romans 10:9-10
"If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved."

Ephesians 2:8-9  For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

FIRST, we learn that becoming a Christian is about more than just "getting saved."  It's about entering into a brand new life by receiving Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior and choosing to follow Him faithfully all of our lives.

SECOND, we learn that we become a Christ follower (a Christian) by repenting of sin, confessing Jesus as Lord & Savior, believing that God raised Him from the dead, placing our faith in Him alone and being baptized as He commanded.

THIRD, we learn that our salvation (the forgiveness of our sin and the reconciliation of our relationship with God) is by GRACE, through faith (obedient trust, James 2:14-26) in Jesus Christ and not by any works that we do to earn it.

Friend, receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior is hands-down the greatest decision I ever made!  If you would like to become a Christ-follower:

1. Pray this prayer to God sincerely, "God I believe in You and in Your Son Jesus.  I repent of my sin and I choose here and now to become a disciple of Jesus (to follow Him as my Lord all the days of my life).  I place all of my faith in Jesus alone.  I receive Jesus--who shed His perfect blood on the cross for my sin--as my Savior.  In the awesome name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

2.  Find a Bible believing Church---and be immersed (baptized--the word baptize means "to immerse").

Romans 6:3-4 "Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."

Then plug into the life of the church, worship with your brothers and sisters, connect in friendship, serve in ministry and study the Bible--personally & with other Christians, and live out your days growing in Christ and following Him!
